âHow much of that did you hear, Ihsan?â asked Yennika, her eyes on the pyrasti in the crackling hearth.
Again custodianâs instincts fought castellanâs duty. This time the castellan won. âEnough to know sheâs upset.â
The corner of Yennikaâs mouth twitched. âAnd youâd like to know why?â
Yes, but it would hardly be proper to say so. âOnly if you think I should.â
âTanithâs inheritance . . . weighs on her. Sheâs impatient for resolution.â
He glanced down at the uneven pile of books on the table opposite where Tanith had lately stood â most of them lying open. A family whoâd scarcely acknowledged her. Had she been searching for legal precedent?
Some other form of leverage? âIllegitimacy always presents challenges.â
Yennika nodded, her eyes still on the fire. âFirebloods and cinderbloods are the same, and yet weâre not. It makes things complicated.â
Damant scowled. âIf Tanith shares blood, sheâs family. Itâs that simple.â
âIhsan, darling.â Yennika laughed under her breath and at last met his gaze. âI wouldnât expect you to get it â after all, youâre a cinderblood yourself â but thank you for trying.â
She was right, he didnât understand. After his recent re- evaluation of Yennika, Damant found it oddly disappointing to learn that she was as elitist as any of her kind. People were people, and it was only the accident of wealth and status that changed things. âCan you help her?â
She offered a slow, steady nod. âI think so, but it requires resources, and time. Tanith has little of the former, and no patience for the latter. I canât blame her. Plenty would kill her for what she is.â
Many a troubled inheritance was smoothed over by an âaccidentâ.
After all, wasnât that the reason heâd met with Marida that morning?
Now that Damant came to think of it, he couldnât recall having seen Tanith leave the palace grounds since sheâd arrived. Its decaying walls had become her refuge. âThatâs why youâre working so hard to restore law to the city? So Tanith might be safe beyond the palace?â
Yennika beamed. âOh, Ihsan, do you really think me so selfless? What 279

a long way weâve come.â She shook her head. âIâm restoring Tyzanta to order because someone should. It was a great city once. It will be again.â
âAnd Tanith?â
âWill understand. If sheâs truly a fireblood. We accept our responsibilities.â Her smile vanished. âWell, most of us.â
âIn that vein, you should probably know that sheâs become,â he grimaced, wondering at the quirk of nature that prevented him from being direct, âfriendly with one of the estate custodians.â
âReally?â Yennikaâs eyes twinkled with enjoyment at his discomfort.
âHow friendly?â
âAbout as much as itâs possible to be.â
Yennika shrugged. âGood for her.â
âIt doesnât worry you?â
âWhat are her family going to do? Disown her again? Kill her twice?
Let Tanith enjoy life while sheâs young. It may not be seemly, but as long as theyâre discreet, whereâs the harm?â
âJosqa uses isshîm. Heâs on his last warning for it.â
âThen Iâm surprised he has anything like the energy to be as friendly as you suggest.
